The fortress of Königstein on the Elbe in Saxon Switzerland has a long history going back to the 13th century. The castle built upon a rock some 240 meters above the river was gradually transformed into a fortress by the rulers of Saxony in the 16th century and mainly served as a state prison (which gave it its name of "Saxon Bastille"). The fortress covers some 9.5 ha, over 50 buildings, surrounded by 1.800 meters of ramparts. To the left is the famous table mountain, the Lilienstein.
