The abbey at Conques

A first Benedictine community was founded in a secluded, forested area in 819 by the hermit Dadon. In their quest for fame and fortune along the route to Compostela the monks of Conques added to their claim of possessing relics as prestigious as the Holy Prepuce and Umbilicial Cord (and allegedly offered by none less than Charlemagne himself), the downright theft in Agen of the remains of Sainte Foy, a martyred virgin from the early 4th century.
