Elk in the tundra

An elk in the alpine tundra of the Park. Elk are some of the commonest wildlife sightings in the Rocky Mountain National Park. Hunted to the brink of extinction in the late 19th century, elk were transplanted from Yellowstone in 1913/4. The absence of natural predators coupled with management planning quickly led to the recovery of the elk population, to such an extent it caused deterioration of the vegetation.
