A weirdly fascinating landscape created by volcanic activity - a vast ocean of cold lava flows that welled up beginning 15.000 years ago from a series of deep fissures (the so-called Great Rift) crossing the Snake River Plain in Idaho. Craters of the Moon was proclaimed National Monument in 1924.
