Bourges gothic cathedral by Marc Haegeman

The Last Judgment

The tympanum of the Last Judgment is with the destroyed rood screen (remnants are now on display in the lower church) the most important sculptural ensemble of the cathedral. Dating from 1230-1240, the Last Judgment provides a vivid illustration of how the end of times was imagined in the 13th century. It follows the common scheme of the day, with the enthroned Christ overlooking the resurrection of the dead and the weighing of souls by St. Michael. The recent cleaning enhanced the expressive power of this group and revealed traces of the vivid colouring.
