Louis XII and Anne of Brittany

This striking renaissance monument of Louis XII (1462-1515) and Anne of Brittany (1477-1514) in Carrara marble was designed by Italian artists. The 12 apostles and the 4 cardinal virtues surround an antique temple. The royal couple is shown in prayer and on their deathbed, inviting people to meditate about death and resurrection. A frieze depicts the military feats of Louis XII in Italy. While disastrous on a political level, the interventions of the French monarchy in Italy at least contributed to spread the cultural achievements of the Italian renaissance and its networking in the orient, across France and the rest of Europe.
