Saint Sernin basilica

Saint Sernin basilica

Begun in the last quarter of the 11th century (the altar was consecrated by pope Urban II in 1096), works were only completed in the 16th century, but a unity of style was preserved. Saint Sernin was a pilgrimage church, keeping the relics of the 3rd-century martyrised first bishop of Toulouse, Saturnin (Sernin in Occitan), and became a major stop on the way to Compostella.
