Statue of Piotr Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) in front of the Conservatory that carries his name since 1940. The Moscow Conservatory is the second oldest in Russia and was founded in 1866 by Nikolay Rubinstein. Tchaikovsky, who had barely graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory and was still unknown as composer, became on of its professors. The Conservatory’s list of alumni reads as the who is who of Russian music, with names like the composers Sergei Rachmaninov, Dmitry Kabalevsky, Aram Khatchaturian, Rodion Shchedrin, Alfred Schnittke, pianists Heinrich Neuhaus, Tatiana Nikolayevna, Sviatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Nikolay Lugansky, violonist David Oistrakh, and conductors Yevgeny Svetlanov, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, among others.
